excuse me, but aren’t we all citizens of Earth? I’d swim across Lake Ontario at the risk of death if I could make 1000 times my yearly salary by working illegally in canada. Yeah, live in some one dog pueblo with zero opportunities for work and watch my family starve or risk my life and live in a dreamland. tough choice, right?
@ js- and you’d be breaking the law doing it. Sorry, folks, line starts on the right. I worked 20 years for the same wages because of illegals. No sympathy here. Fix your own country, don’t screw up mine.
Um, is there supposed to be a point to this? There is a place on the border where Mexico has a road and some buildings on the edge of the border and the U.S. doesn’t? Is that it? I don’t get it.
How is it hard to believe this? Mexico is filled with allot of people, allot who want to come here. America is filled with allot of people who don’t want to go to Mexico, so why would it surprise you that the more densely populated one is the Mexican one?
Lots of border towns are setup EXACTLY like this. If there was a burgeoning metropolis right next door to Mexico there would be NO way to control the flow of illegal immigrant into the country. You need some wide open spaces as it deters people from attempting to hoof it.
And to the gentleman who made the quip about republicans and communists: I lived in a border town for 20 odd years, which was setup exactly the same way. Clinton was in office for a good 8 of those 20 and it looks very similar to the above to this very day.
The photo is real, and only 10 miles from my home. To the left is Tijuana Mexico. On the right is a river valley used for horse ranches. The U.S. property is price depressed and not developed because no one wants to own property with hoards of illegals fleeing the Border Patrol running through all the time. I used to go birdwatching near here and you would find piles of dirty discarded clothing and underwear from people who had crossed the Tijuana river, very disgusting. The new higher border fence has reduced traffic, but it only went elsewhere.
It’s definitely real, I live in san diego, and instantly recognized it. I’ve driven the road on the right many times on my way south into baja. You’re looking at the sprawl of Tijuana on the right.
why wouldnt this be real? That US land there is probably REALLY low in realestate value. NO surprise there is not much there.. on the other hand.. that land in Mexico is probably fairly high for TJ.
That’s San Ysidro on the left. Directly behind you is the Pacific Ocean. The US keeps a buffer zone through that area. The building there is a water treatment plant. Tijuana, on the right, is a pretty dirty and disease ridden city ensconced in dire poverty.
This makes sense:
The mexicans have an incentive to live near the american border. The americans have less incentive to live near the mexican border.
If the two areas had been at comperable habitation/industrialization levels at one point and then were divided arbitrarily and one side degraded while the other side flourished, then an analogy to east germany would be relevant.
What a lot of Americans fail to realize is that, for every uneducated poverty-stricken individual who wants to come to this country, there are thousands of Mexican citizens who do not. Furthermore, numerous stories have been appearing lately that indicate that many Mexicans are going back to Mexico due to the depressed American economy and difficulty finding work. Ask yourselves this: Who is the fence for?
To say that illegals will steal jobs from Americans is nonsense. Illegals generally do jobs the american don’t want too. Specially because many of them do not have qualifications. I live in a country in europe with large number of immigrants. I don’t fear competition because I have high qualifications. The US is a country of emigrants, or you guys do not know your own past. The only true americans were the indians. The other guys, who killed all indians, were foreigners, including many criminals expelled by the UK empire crown and others coming from other countries to try their luck. So, america should pay some respect to those, the immigrants, who built their country.
mexicans are not the problem… it’s 3rd world poor people that are the problem… they drain resources taxpayers pay for… they commit crimes (because they are poor)… drive without insurance… some do not want to learn english, therefore requiring many government jobs to hire bilingual speakers… and they do take jobs because corporations prefer to exploit people for less pay under the table than pay fair wages… it just happens mexicans live next door, if north korea was next door we would have north koreans.
I live near there also. As the border fence slopes toward the ocean, there’s a small park, and the fence posts thin out into the ocean. Little kids and sometimes adults will walk between the posts and cross into the U.S. while they’re playing in the water, but there’s always a border patrol truck up on the bluff just above the fence to make sure no one gets too far. It’s actually a very pretty spot, and people can ride horses along the oceanfront on the U.S. side where there is no development, as it is both a protected river outlet as well as a border buffer zone.
I’ve actually been to this site, on both sides. The only reason for the open space is to allow border patrol to easily identify people illegally crossing. The highway on the right leads down the pacific coast to Rosarito.
this is a very interesting photo although i’m not sure what it’s supposed to be saying (if anything) but it is interesting to see that sort of artificial divide that seems to be there. the sharp line. great photo.
Tim..u r a fucking idiot…the native americans are from siberia originally…so therefore the land is free for the taking by whever has the mney. and yes, mexicans are a dirty filthy bunch that take jobs that nobody wants therefore driving the wages down for the rest of the population. because of this lower class swine.
also, the fence is not nearly as high as it should be to keep those fuckers out!!! The only reason they go back to mexico is to get more drugs or deliver money to their meth gangs so they can bring it back to the US.
Ever watch a mexican tv show?? None of those people look like the fuckers that cross the border to the US. That means they are outcasts and their own country doesn’t want them!!!
great picture, a shocking representation of the increasing pressure the 3rd world puts on our safe and confortable world… a wall is not the solution, it’s only the stupid part of the problem
tell me, what has a mexican done in the past 100 years that has had a truly positive effect on your life?
Uhm…they have been the people who grow your lands, the construction workers, the people that work in your factories, your maids…so, you pretty much depend on them…so stop being such a racist and open your mind a little bit more before you open your mouth.
PS. If you hate Mexico that much, why the hell do you love to go to Cabo and Cancun so much? Mexico is a better country than yours, get over it.
Yeah there is no point to this, its just funny some of your comments, like if there is any place on the US border where we dont have high development we have failed somehow. the only thing interesting is your dumb comments.
GOOD. The fence is working. I was worried that by me giving up universal health care to keep all the brown people out was a huge gamble but the photo clearly shows that it is working.
I’m sooooo happy I can now die in peace when be denied health coverage just as long as those damn brown people stay out of my GREAT country!!!
To say that illegals will steal jobs from Americans is nonsense. Illegals generally do jobs the american don’t want too. Specially because many of them do not have qualifications… The US is a country of emigrants, or you guys do not know your own past. The only true americans were the indians.
Tim, listen, I am a floor installer and I want to be this, however it is hard getting work because there are illegals that will do it for cheaper. so yes they are taking the jobs we want. Get informed, some Americans enjoy manual labor. Even if this was the case it is not a reason to let them all come in. If you do a little research you will find that about 90% of the illegals working here just send the money back to their country, hurting OUR economy. And yes you are right we are a nation of immigrants, and that is good. However, you must remember that our ancestors came here LEGALLY , they pay taxes, they put money back into our economy.
David said:

David, show me one article, just one.
@Paul Kennedy, that was the most ignorant statement of them all and it deserves no response.
Its a shame what some of you Amricans say here. What you say trully shows that USA is not the greatest nation in the world. But it still has a chance to be. As long as it educates morrons like you. It’s 21st century and you still believe that someone can steal your job or force your goverment to employ billingual people. I have a question then: Why dont’ you learn a foreing language and get that job the government is willing to give you? Why do you sit tight doing nothing except nag about how others are not rigth for your country? It’s because you’re lazy and poor in your head, I’d say. Many Americans nowdays are familiar with the fact that their goverments in the past have done some horrible things to nations around the world and that the standrads Amricans live with today, have made some other nations very poor. This planet does not have enough resources for everyone to live like Amricans. There is not enough food, oil, energy, homes, drinking water and medications. The fact that Amricans have those things, can only mean that they took it from someone else. Not all that grows freely in America. You guys now have to face the fact that some of it needs to be given back. If not by directly giving your food of the table to poor in Africa or in Latin Amrica, then by axepting those that are willing to stay nad work with you, if only in stead of those you how sit tight and DO NOT WNAT TO MOVE THEIR FINGER, but still expect that their government takes food of the other people’s table and gives it cheeply to them. That aint gonna work that way any more. Sorry guys. I just aint. I love you all, and your country. You’re a proud and big nation with many wonderfull people and places, but you’re just gonna need to learn a lesson or two no. I know it’s hard, here in Balkans we’ve experienced that recently, but it’s just he way the life is.
Kisses…
Quite simply it’s to keep the control of our own borders. If you have a problem with a neighbor’s dog pissing in your backyard you can either shoot the dog or build a fence. We could shoot the illegals but that would be politically unpopular. Putting up a fence makes the control problem a lot more manageable. Not having a fence is like inviting the dog to piss in your backyard.
Paul Kennedy: It’s idiots like you that demonstrate the continuing embarrassment of the US education system. Comparing Republicans to the Communists illustrates your total ignorance of history. You are a moron. You’re free to leave the USA and live in Mexico. The East Germans didn’t have the luxury to leave the iron curtain.
Congratulations Paul. You are the dumbest moron on the planet. The East Germans had towers manned with people who had orders to shoot to kill any of it’s citizens that dared try to leave their country. They had to get through the minefields first, the guard dogs and barbed wire. The East German border shared with West Germany even had mines on the actual fence if you made it that far. You show me one spot on our border where that exists to keep our people in. Idiot!
I realy don’t see what this picture proves. That Tijuana is a huge, sprawling border town, and major trade crossing from the U.S? One would expect it to expand right up to the U.S. border, as it cannot go beyond that. How many U.S. cities expand until some border is reached?
As for illegal Immigration, it is a complex issue, and peole come to the U.S. predominantly for economic reasons. There is little upward mobility in Mexico, and if someone wants to build a business, or increae their wages, it is exceedingly difficult for those who have the entrepreneurial incentive but lack the skills. And yes, it is true that most illegals work at jobs U.S. citizens won’t work at, or earn less than prevailing wages.
In my area of northern Va., almost all construction, drywall, framers and day laborers are immigrants, and most make between $8 and $15 per hour, cash. $8 to $10 per hour is the going rate for day labor. Skilled labor is higher, but still much less than non-immigrant labor.
Border walls are not the answer. To stop the illegal immigration problem, we need to 1) improve border security 2) punish employers who are hiring them and 3) have a NATIONAL system to track U.S. citizens, so employers can accurately determine who is legal or not, and 4) create incentives for Mexico to improve its business development and quality of life.
Unfortuantely from a political standpoint, pioiunt 2 will not happen as local businesses like the lower wages, point 3 is abhorrent to many U.S. citizens, including myself, and 4 just won’t happen.
The other issue to note is that Mexico has been hit even harder by China’s unfair trade practices than we were, and lost even more jobs as a percentage of their workforce due to ousorcing than we did.
Normally when I read comments like these, I recommend to children that they should stay in school. However it’s clear a lot of children here are being sadly disserviced by their schools by allowing such rampant ignorance to escape. Liberal children are so quick to jump on any thing that they think might be unfair and want to rally around and protest their grievances, but lack and don’t even bother to investigate, the causes for and rationale behind what they see. This is why older people who have experienced the world and learned from real world application are often at odds with these children, simply because their progress for the sake of progress is a fool’s errand.
Ya know seeing this picture reminds me of what north Korea does at it’s border. Puts up really nice looking cities that try to intice south Koreans to jump the border into the north. I know that’s not the case here but it reminds me of that.
Well… most of you seem uneducated enough to repeat what you’ve heard on CNN.
I is true that a lot of Mexicans cross the border looking for work, but the implications on your economy are anything but negative. Mexican immigrants provide very cheap labor for work americans are not willing to do, such as harvesting all over California. Please refer to this link for further reading on this matter: http://aad.english.ucsb.edu/econimpacts.html
Now, the most troubling thing about this whole matter for me is that Americans fail to realize that Mexico, even when its a third-world country, has very well developed cities and social security plans; things that make our country a very nice place to live in. While it may be true that our income is very low compared to the average American, it is also true that our expenses are way lower too, so our acquisitive power is comparable. Here, take this link as a quick reference: http://www.mexperience.com/liveandwork/living_in_mexico.htm
Finally, It would be nice for the average American to take advantage of his access to technology and information, and develop a criterion of his own. Take this amazing TED talk as a starter, I assure you it will shatter your preconceived ideas regarding the third world: http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/140
Perhaps “the problem” is not 3rd world poor people, but policies and government entanglements that ensure there are 3rd world poor people. You can always look at things from a wider perspective (including that one); don’t be afraid to.
The idea that one person is entitled to a standard of living and another is not, based only on whether they were born in this country or they were born in that country is a sad one.
Tim,
Your an idiot! Don’t even try to compare Europeans to Americans. Europeans have not only slaughtered millions upon millions of people, they don’t even know their own history. Now they are the European Union? So how does that work exactly? When Germany invades France again, who is supposed to come to France’s rescue? It’s not a job most Americans want to do…. I know, let’s get the Mexicans to do it!
That fence is missing something… gun turrets and razor wire.
I find it amusing when all the pro-illegals cry, yet they don’t live anywhere near the border.
The world is outraged that 37oo soldiers have been killed in Iraq, yet over 4000 people have been killed along the border due to human and drug trafficking wars in the same time period.
“I worked 20 years for the same wages because of illegals.”
anyone who works for more than 2 years for the same rate is an either an idiot or so lacking in ambition that illegals will own you next week.
Self preservation is a basic animal instinct.USA is an Oasis for the poor just like a pond in scorching heat is an Oasis for animals.
America and Europe is consumers paradise, they love to exploit the Earth and other nations and i applaud them for being adventures..they worked hard since they left England 500 years ago when we all were sitting on our asses doing nothing.
Those coordinates are for Temecula, CA, about an hour north of Mex. Try Google maps for “Tijuana, Mexico” and take a look at the border. This phenomenon exists only in densely populated Mexican towns that border the US. In context they could be construed to visually represent “the dream”, with Mexicans piling up at the border towns, wanting to be close to their dream country, but out of context it can be used as propoganda to elicit a reaction of horor and disgust in those inclined to be fearful of “those people”. No borders. That’s the future. Peace.
This Picture is real. And I think that someone is trying to show how “well developed” Mexico is compared to those bad bad Americans…look up the coordinates on Google earth…then slowly start scrollin your mouse as to zoom out…more and more you see this little spot which is the mexico side and this HUGE area called the US. I find it so telling how one picture from one angle seems to tell a story…but the truth of it comes from a 40,000 ft view and higher. It is quite obvious that the city on the Mexican side looks like a tiny virus growing on the underbelly of an unsuspecting cell.
You’re stupid, no you’re stupid.
Jesus people, it’s a picture. Wonder why we’re falling apart as a nation?
Because you’re too focused on who’s right and who’s wrong.
It’s a real picture. Move on. Go feed some hungry people or buy a sweater for a cold child.
Do something that matters.
“The idea that one person is entitled to a standard of living and another is not, based only on whether they were born in this country or they were born in that country is a sad one.”
See, this is the problem with the socialist idiots in Europe (and the rest of the places in the world they have exported it to). You have a completely mistaken idea of the way the United States work. You assume we feel we’re entitled to this standard of living. We don’t. We ASPIRE to it and work to achieve it. We don’t (most of us, anyway) wait for the handout we feel “entitled” to. While I do agree the borders need to be policed much better, I find it ironic that many of the illegals have the same attitude: they have the ambition and aspiration for a better life than they had in Mexico. They just have no desire to do it legally, as permanent citizens. Instead, they drain our economic resources and send their gains back to Mexico. I think a failing US dollar is the greatest thing to happen in a long time if it is removing this incentive!
I like how seeker says “I worked 20 years for the same wages because of illegals. No sympathy here. Fix your own country, don’t screw up mine.”
I love how people blame the consequences of their own bad choices on anything but themselves. Who in their right mind would work somewhere for twenty years without a wage increase?
America needs a low wage population - why should we subjugate our own citizens? Having a low wage job is not a privilige - its a survival reaction.
Hating on illegal immigrants is wrong? What part of illegal don’t you understand you hippies?? I have no problem with people of other countries coming here to work, take jobs that are open to taking. My problem is with the people that don’t want to do it legally. You file paperwork and get a work visa? Go ahead, cut my grass, plow my fields, or do whatever job you are capable of. You wanna just jump the border and take a job illegally? Go home, get out of this country.
Yeah, immigrants do a lot of jobs that normally wouldn’t be filled. But they also take plenty of jobs that would normally be filled by citizens. My friend dated one, who was working in construction, taking a job that any normal citizen would want. Get the illegals out. Quit this crap of “Well, they are people too” Tell them to come here legally and they are more than welcome to live their dream. Quit trampling others because they feel they are above the law.
Canadians have no problem enforcing there laws which complement ours. In Mexico for the most part, laws are not enforced. How long will the average Mexican work in our fields before wanting citizenship? If Mexico would clean up their act, we wouldn’t need a border fence. El Norte’ is not the answer. Fixing Mexico should be. Do we owe Mexicans citizenship. No! What
gives Mexicans more rights to be here than anyone else in the world? If I moved to Mexico, would they treat me the same as we treat Mexicans here with health care and education? Probably not. I would probably be robbed or kidnapped. Advice: If you want to be an American, learn English, serve in the military. Freedom is not free.
Just a thought as to why teh American side is so desolate and teh mexican so packed.
A: americans dont need to live in a goddam desert, we can go somwewhere else.
and
B. America does not have what amounts to one of the biggest cottage industries in the modern world of smuggling people illegally across a border.
What we need is a Mexican lottery!! Every tenth illegal alien caught coming across the border gets a one way trip to Paraguay in a C130! The word would get around fast as it’s a long walk home. Any violent ones would get the same …only to Ethiopia. We got a border . Its the law. Enuf said….
4 Ernie: iliterate POS like you are the reason why we have fucked up country, wait till Barrack Hussein Obama gets to the White House and you will be running to Mexico for cover.
It’s funny how these Mexican cities hug up against the U.S. border like some kind of giant parasite. This reminds me of El Paso/Juarez - though I’m surprised to see the Mexican side is paved - usually it’s just dirt.
It is wonderful how the bigots uneducated and general low lifes come out of the woodwork about this.
1 Mexico is our neighbor and came to the aid of the United States citizens in their hour of need(Hurricane Katrina).
2.I happen to live with one of those immigrants (my wife) women in America you need to wake up, you and your ideas are a dying breed.
3 Of the 3 0r 400 immigrants legal and illegal I personally know are all hard working people who pay taxes, social security, rent, buy cars, food, medicine, clothes, stereos, tvs, homes and a thousand other things with the money they earn. The bulk of them spend 95% of their money here in the U.S. and that they do send home is to help support their family members there.
4. While it is true there is a drug problem, the adage if you don’t by it, they can’t sell it applies here. So if you want to blame some one look in the mirror the guilty party is there.
Wake up grow up and get a life.
If get up off of your lazy no account butt and quit whining about how your not getting you fair share and get you ass to work maybe your boss might stop looking for some one to replace you.
This is a real picture. I used to live on a farm that used to be there in the 1980’s. This was taken on a boarder patrol trail we used to ride ATvs on. The boarder patrol positions a night scope on that hill and overlooks this entire valley. The entire area is a flood zone and an animal sanctuaray called the Tijuana River Valley. The Tijuana River is just as polluted and hazardous as The New River that runs from Calexico further West. he Mexican side dumps millions of gallons of waste water back on to the American side, so the Americans have built water treatment plantas to clean and reuse this water. Do a research of the Salton Sea, Tijuana River Valley and The New River project. It is very interesting. You can actually see news video of Mexican waste truckers dumping their septic trucks in to The New River and it flows on to The US side and on to The Salton Sea.
ummm…the us is on the right, not the left..whoever originally posted this doesnt know his right from left. thats the border highway on the right and it runs east to west.
i am so amazed at yr ignorance when the facts are right there on your pc’s…
I find it amazing that so many people in the US are so morally despicable that they want to keep others in poverty to improve their expected wages. I think the only hope for a country like that is nuclear destruction.
Idiots are people who believe the media and government when they tell them to blame a group of people they distrust (fear) for their problems so that they miss the obvious. It was only last Presidential election that George Bush was put back into office for HIS POSITION ON GAY MARRIAGE! LOL! Heard anything about it since?
You want to blame someone for your problems? Blame your government and what it’s done to the dollar. Blame the Federal Reserve. Blame your small minds.
Ernie,
You are just proving a point that American’s are uneducated and ignorant just like your president. We are all immigrants in our countries and to say that Mexicans are dirty and steal your country’s jobs is unbelievable. You walk into a McDonalds, or see the janitors in your country. Are they white? Nope they are immigrants so if the “amercian’s” want those “good jobs” let them have it. Mexican’s are hard working people and lack the weight issues that you American’s have. So I don’t speak for everyone but dude - get a life
I was born and raised in San Diego; spent more than 30 years there, off and on…the picture looks like it was taken, either by San Ysidro, Otay Lakes or out around Spring Valley.
Being born in Mexico and brought up in the US, kinda makes me feel ashamed that i share a country with ignorant, racist, hateful, and ignorant assholes.
I have so much to say, but i just don’t want to stoop down to your level. lmao. i just wanted to throw this out there….
to the f**king idiot who said that mexico has never had a four lane highway…… i love you….its idiots like you that helped me look better when applying to the university i now attend.
xoxo
ps-
keep paying those taxes!
I was born in Argentina at 1,982. I live in Argentina. I am Argentinian and proud.
I am also American word that you in your arrogance, taken as the sole property.
While I am young, it is perfectly, that the potential risk of wars will be reduced when your damned country collapse.
THEY MAY spend a thousand years, we will see many countries free arise and perish … But like Rome, will fall … Is the only consolation we have left the rest of the world ..
Bush, you are the worst scourge exists
Nací en Argentina en 1.982. Vivo en Argentina. Soy Argentino y orgulloso.
It is interesting that so much discussion was generated by antidotal evidence. This is, after all, only one picture and much has been assumed by glancing at it.
But I cannot help but comment on the discussion. The hating of immigrants (both legal and illegal) because of economic pressures is a long standing tradition in the United States. There was once a political party primarily based on this position. It called itself the “American Party” (Ironically it started as the “Native American Party”), but it is primarily known by what other people called it: the “Know Nothing Party”.
Then, as now, people were frightened by the prospect that immigrants would compete for their jobs and lower wages. They were right, as people are today. But we are a much more democratic country today, and the government tends to reflect more the citizen’s wishes than that of big business (before you get all excited, I am comparing today’s environment with history. Big business still has a lion’s share of influence, just not as much as it used to). Today, the government responds to the fears of the citizens more than the desires of business for cheap labor. One might think that this is a good thing, but it is not and it will be the downfall of our country. With globalization, business can simply ship the factories overseas and let our culture wallow in its incestuous labor market. Without competition (however painful) we cannot grow.
If you like installing floors, that is all well and good. But do you deserve a fixed wage for doing so? If so, who gets to decide what that wage would be. The person who pays to have his floor installed might have a different idea for that wage than you. So far, we have been very successful letting the market decide what that wage should be. Should the pool of floor installers be restricted? If so, I assume that you would want to be included in that pool. The easy solution appears to be to restrict the pool to U.S. citizens, but (believe it or not) this creates an artificial market that will, in the long run, be detrimental to the common good.
As to the concern for legality, please remember that these are not criminals. The sort of immigration we are talking about is illegal but it is not a criminal offence. How many of the people who complain about illegal immigrants violate the speed limit? Ironically, the illegal immigrant is much more likely to follow the traffic laws than the one who complains about them. Both are breaking the law. In once case, the broken law will result in lower wages for installing floors. The other broken law can result in death or injury.
I say, let the flood gates open. Let them come in. Live up to the inscription on the Statue of Liberty. With globalization, wages will go down whether the jobs are shipped overseas or stay here. I say, let them stay here.
Spend a little time on the border and then tell me if you think this picture (if real) is representative. I was down there just 2 weeks ago, and I can tell you that there is a huge contrast between one side of the border and the other, but not the way that this picture suggests.
wait, let me understand this, we enact immigration laws and establish borders. Then we fail to enforce the laws and don’t regulate our borders. Who is really the fool? The guy coming over to work like a dog for a better life or us? Maybe we need to round up congress and send them to work for a few years in Puebla.
Well, this is real and it cant be better, because I have been to that side of US and Mexico several times.
The fact of the view is no one wants to build any house of anything right besides Mexico in the company of bad amigos and the bad amigos wanted everything near US border that’s is the reason the border town of Mexico looks developed and in the same place US looks deserted.
Tell me who want there house next to poor Mexico neighbourhood when no one inside US wants to live next to Mexican families that’s why we have no go areas where Mexican lives.
Seeker137…You didn’t work for 20 for the same wage because of illegal aliens. You worked for 20 for the same wage because you refused to gather up a few hundred of your co-workers and kick in the front doors of the Board of Directors with sharp objects in your hands.
Don’t blame your SELF IMPOSED corporate slavery on people who have been duped into thinking that things are better north of the border.
Why would this be shocking? Different places look different. Americans are full of shit - why would anyone want to live among a bunch of racist, uneducated assholes anyway unless they absolutely had no other choice, like many poor people from Mexico.
Who’s paying? The traitors in YOUR country. Blame them.
>> The border
That’s not a border. That’s a joke. Take a look at the border that is dividing North and South Korea - that’s a border. Now ask yourself - why on earth American soldiers are keeping one country separated on the other side of this planet? Shouldn’t those soldiers be patrolling on this border?
all of the people who come here and insult people of the united states are no better than any of the other racists, but that often seems lost on people since it’s the “in” thing to do to bash them for their political status and etc.
everyone also seriously needs to stop taking all the loud-mouths on the internet as some representation of any country… especially the united states where every wannabe little “gangsta” has plenty of unmoderated computer access :p
personally, i don’t see why people like to jump on the united states as some villain where in the same vein they would glorify many a european country with much, much more strict policies on immigration (including learning their language, oh no how evil?!) and much tougher punishments for skirting them. it is just yet another thing that people like to take and distort the facts of so that they can continue their unfounded US-hatred and boohoing. if you want to hate the US government - hey, that’s fine and good, but to extend that hatred to the country’s people is quite ignorant… just as it is for anyone to fault all mexicans for those who try to cross the border.
as for the person who said people of the united states like to take the word “american” for themselves - i have never understood why people, and not just those from the US, use that term either when american does indeed encompass a very large part of the world outside US borders. it’s stupid.
well, i must say I’m really impressed. At fist i started reading all of this and I couldn’t stand it, i wanted to punch everyone who wrote on here, at least the ones who insulted my country. I am Mexican, and I am fucking proud of it, and yes there are many, many people who go to the US to find jobs to help their families or whatever and sure it might not be the best way to earn a living but i want to see you in their places. besides if your fucked up government actually worked as well as you say it does, you wouldn’t have my people over there now would you? besides they work their asses off to keep your economy where it is. If it wasn’t for the “illegals” your “perfect” country would be even more fucked up than mine. its so cliché to quote Molotov but they are right. ¨Now why don’t you look down to where your feet is planted That U.S. soil that makes you take shit for granted If not for Santa Ana, just to let you know That where your feet are planted would be Mexico, Correcto!¨ Frijolero-Molotov
In god you trust? jajajaja, well i think you’ve fallen from Gods grace with your ¨war on terror¨.
Mexico is a beautiful country, and its much better that yours. We have culture, and manners.
as we say in MEXICO
¨Pinches Gringos nacos¨.
There are alot of comments here from people from the U.S. I’m the Mexican perspective. Lived in Mexico City for almost all my life, a few years in D.C (NOT ILLEGALLY) and I have family both in Tijuana and San Diego. Firs of all you people should all get your facts straight. I can’t believe there is a comment that says Mexico y socialist. That is the biggest falacy I have ever heard. People, go to the library and read first before you give your opinion.
to all who thinks its bad to see that pic well look at it closer to home and what you got. when one comes over illegal and works for less that 1/2 you do which is 5 times what they get there your job is in jepordy people hire under the table for a chance to a few bucks at the price of you not working. how would you feel about not being hire because you dont know spanish all of sothern california is that way dont know 2 languages dont get a job. so if they wanna come over they go and do the proper paper work. you cant go there and get anything with what you know and there is no paper work to help you.
I love a good controversial post like this. Its just a photo! I live in AZ and go to Mexico several times a year. The people are genuine, the prices are low and its generally a good time. Every border crossing I have been to looks similar to this.
If you want to learn about capitalism, go to Mexico. They understand it much better than any culture I have seen. If you are building a shop that sells curios, where are you going to put it? In the middle of nowhere? Or are you going to put it where the people with the money can get to it?
Thats what I thought…
On the subject of immigration, I don’t think people should break the law. It is illegal to work in this country without some kind of permit and plain and simple, many Mexicans are working here without a permit. But to say that Mexicans are any different that any other kind of immigrant, British, French, Turk, is just plain wrong.
Here is the thing that sucks for Mexicans; Any American could cross the border to Mexico, shop, play, drink till they puke, break the law etc. But a Mexican must be a homeowner, own a car and have close relatives living in their area to get a visa to come to America legally. I think that is BS. Not every Mexican wants to live here, but they are treated like criminals if they want to visit the US.
Lets remember another thing folks. Those terrorists that brought down the towers were here from (mostly) Pakistan. They were arabs, not Mexicans. Even though they each had multiple ID’s they were here legally. We let them in. How scary is that? Dont count on your government to keep you safe. They cant do it and YOU are allowing them to take away your rights in the name of security.
The wall is a waste of money. It wont keep determined bad guys out. It wont keep people who walk from El Salvador through Mexico to the US. “Oh, gee! A Wall. I guess we should walk back. Lets go guys”
Who are we kidding? Oh yeah, you. Mr. and Mrs. American public.
This photo is real. I used to live in the yellow apartment complex in the background. Every day I would walk along this highway to my job as a Mexican border patrol.
I think the border needs to be closed off. In a perfect world I would say keep it open. I want the Mexican people to have a good life. If we keep the border open Mexico will never fix its internal problems. By closing the border Mexico would be forced into dealing with its issues. In the long run this would make Mexico a better country. When Mexico fixes many of its problems the border could be opened up. Then there would be no reason for people to come to the United States. Not closing the border will hurt the U.S. in the long run. This open border could also be used to move a nuclear bomb into the U.S. by terrorists.
i dont think that we need a wall to close off the border, but i do think that we need a tighter system witch allows the immigrants so become legal and not have to hide
What a great representation of our great country! Let’s prove to all other nations what Kind and Compassionate people we are. I am from the United States and wish other countries to see that not all US Citizens are represented here in these comments. There are a lot of us who welcome ANYONE looking to better their lives and the lives of their families. I am sorry for all the ignorance that has been shown on here. God bless you all and I will pray for forgiveness for those of you who show such hatred.
Personally I think open borders are the answer. It seams to work in Europe. However if we must have a border, then let it do it’s job. First let us have crossing gates, manned by border patrol. Let those wishing to enter the US have their persons and vehicles be searched for drugs. Also let them be checked against lists of known terrorist threats and known drug dealers. If they clear let them through, if not the proper authorites should be notified. This way those with nothing to hide can freely come and go to work or to visit. Those who avoid the crossing gates will be easier for the border patrol to catch, and will most likely have illegal purposes for doing so.
Mexico has 4 lane roads, and it has freeways and toll roads also. I have been to the San Diego border and crossed into Mexico. It was back in the 80’s. All the cars were second hand from the US and they were the heavy polluters from the 1970’s. The area is beautiful but violence has been picking up greatly with all the crime and drug dealing. If you want to help calm down Mexico, stop buying drugs.
I was in the construction business in California in the early 90’s and self employed. I began running into competition where two or three illegals were under bidding me for work. They effectively put me out of business as well as union stone masons and carpenters. I would see white middle class subcontractors picketing the local Kaufman & Broad homebuilder because they began using hispanic subs instead of the local middle class whites. Lower costs put many of these people out of work. Its not because these are jobs people in this country didn’t want. It was now that they couldn’t afford to work for the wages the hispanics were making. Of course most of the money was making its way back to mexico and no taxes were paid.
I am part Cherokee, Blackfoot and european. The hispanic that comes here are the old indigenous tribes from Mexico. The europeans in Mexico own all the land and businesses. The birth rate in Mexico is still 11 or 12 children per family. Education is lousy and I put large blame on their religious beliefs and no family planning.
I now live in Atlanta. Same goes here. There are about 1 million illegals in the Atlanta area. They completely control the construction business. I was on one project with over 100 people working. There was only one white non-hispanic carpenter. The only non hispanic sub was the HVAC company.
Its all because everyone wants the bigger cheaper home. Guess one of the good things that has happened with this current downturn is many have gone back home until the construction environment picks up again.
If Mexico is connected to the U.S. ,why, and who decided that they can’t have the same rights as us?Don’t Americans vacation in Mexico all the time!No one in the U.S. complains when THEY get to visit everywhere else in the world, but when someone tries to come here we have a right to say no.What a double standard!!
you guys say we mexicans are bad and all, but the truth is that we contribute to this countrie’s wealth. Plus, we work in places that white people dont want to work, like int he fields. How come u dont see a white guy picking grapes or anything, huh? think about it.
well i think that we should really get rid of this border thing because it’s just stupid… does anyone understand the word
UNITED????? well my husband is from mexico and is at the border right now and i hope that they let him through! (he’s llegal here) and i pray for anyone coming through will be safe and please just be careful!!!!
the word united means pretty much everyone and all kinds of backgrounds!!!!!!!! let’s make this world better and stop haten on people that come from differ places WE R ALL THE SAME WITHIN OUR SELFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is everyone so interested in the coordinates of this picture? Why not focus on the real issue. I have read several of you making racist remarks about illegals and so forth. Seeker135 says he resents that he has been working a low wage job forever because of the immigrants. WRONG! You know what the solution is for that, go to school. I am not Mexican but I am Hispanic, I married a white man and his sister is forever complaining about the Cubans having a better job than her as a matter of fact she hates that I make more money than her. Well Guess what she only has a 9th grade education and she does not even know how to spell correctly. I have a college education how of course I am going to make more money than her. My point is if you want a better paying job go back to school and get an education. All of us as US Citizens and Legal residents take for granted all the opportunities we have at our fingertips and we settle for jobs that pay the bills but do not give us the financial freedom we so much desire.
As for David the reason the undocumented immigrants are going back is not becuase of the economy but becuase of the stupid law Arizona has implemented in sanctioning businesses of they are found employing illegals. Well guess what how convinient was it for the court date for this appeal to take place after the Super Bowl. I wonder who would be cleaning the hotel rooms or the stadium and serving at the fast food joints and washing dishes at the restraunts when we were bombarded with tourists.
Let’s face it if the US really wanted to get rid of the Illegals they have very easy access to many of them. For example: There are so many illegals that own vehicles and the DMV gives them a registration. Well all the DMV would have to do is provide INS with a list of registered car owners that do not have a drivers license, most likely they do not have legla status. Secondly There are many ileglas that file their taxes using an ITIN # well the government on a national level can pull a query and see who is not legal and they can draw up deportation orders, but the thing is they do not do that. It is not to their best interest to do that. Without undocumented immigants this country will be in a greater bind than it is already in.
Now as far as the Border is concerned, the United States is very unilateral in their dealing with Mexico. First of all before anyone makes comments to post for the wolr to see and sound like an ass do your research first.
One of the great reasons their is such a great infulx of immigrants coming into the US more than other years is becuase of NAFTA. NAFTA is good for the US but it has created huge hardship and destabalization in the Lancondon Jungle in Chiapas Mexico, forcing many indigenous people out of their villages and having to seek work in Mexico City or coming to the US. They cannot compete with large farmers and they are not educated and do not have the skills to be up to par with the new technology that is being implemented in many parts of mexico in harvesting crops. Then there are the Maquilas. Many US companies take their factories to the border cities and they are taking advantage of the labor there isn’t any labor control, women are forced to give sexual favors to their managers in order to keep their jobs and or they are forced to work 15 hour days, and they get paid less than men do. What is worst of all is that the Maquilas dump toxins into the river and people are dying on both sides of the border with rare types of leukemia, and other strange diseases.
Then you ask why are the Mexicans coming to the US.
Well the US has contributed to this situation. As a matter of fact the US had brought in the Mexicans under the Brazero Program during World War II when there was a labor shortage due to 14 million soldiers that were sent to fight and this program allowed Mexicans to come in and work in the farms, factories, and the railroads (Englebert 205). Then in the 70’s the government put forth operation wetback which kind of what is happening now.
Now the mexicans and any other immigrant from any other country is coming in search to survive not to strip the country. The only thing is that since we are so liberal here we have not required conditions like Canada does. They respect other cultures but a new resident in Canada must also learn and adapt to the Canadian culture.
Furthermore, we are all humans and how can there be so much hate for a particular race. Everyone that is not a Native American and by that I mean an American Indian (Full Blooded), comes from immigrant ancestory.
And the reality is that society is afraid of the skin color. I will tell you one thing there is no need to be afraid of the Hispanics we are far too disuntied to ever organize ourselves. But if we were united we could be more powerful than race. But until then my people are hardworking people and they are doing the jobs that lazy Americans will not do. I know I would not go work in construction when the heat is 120 degrees would you? If your answer is no then I rest my case.
hi, i’m from EU but dunno why US need wall with mexico? some plague is goin outa there? Here, in EU we are much much more human, we learned from WW2 that there is no one supernation, no superhuman, but we are same, some “bones and flesh”.We have one God, we must doing together something for better future.
“well i think that we should really get rid of this border thing because it’s just stupid”
If you did this, you’d need to abolish state-funded healthcare, education etc. Otherwise these systems would collapse anyway, in line with the median income of the USA.
Better to retain the border and just earn yourself virtue points by dissing it.
you don’t get it do you? this is fine. they can come here if they want, JUST DO IT LEGALLY! they need to learn the language and be able to speak it. such as for a job, school, and hospitals and for the police. they can speak whatever they want at home, just be able to speak english. on a different note i think that the mexicans are the only problem, any other immigrant needs to speak english or america will fall.we will just be a country with no culture or a set language. we need to be careful in order to stay american.

Where is this? What town in Mexico
Wyatt
@Wyatt-I got this off of a .gov site that had many border images. Unfortunately it doesn’t say where it is.

The US side of the border reminds of what the East German side of the Berlin Wall looked like.
Who would have thought that communists and republicans would have so much in common.

excuse me, but aren’t we all citizens of Earth? I’d swim across Lake Ontario at the risk of death if I could make 1000 times my yearly salary by working illegally in canada. Yeah, live in some one dog pueblo with zero opportunities for work and watch my family starve or risk my life and live in a dreamland. tough choice, right?

Please don’t tell me that you believe that is real?
Open google earth/maps and scan the US/ mexico border and try to find something even similar and I bet you cant.

@ js- and you’d be breaking the law doing it. Sorry, folks, line starts on the right. I worked 20 years for the same wages because of illegals. No sympathy here. Fix your own country, don’t screw up mine.

“The US side of the border reminds of what the East German side of the Berlin Wall looked like.”
Except the East German government was trying to keep people in, we are trying to keep people out.
Chris // Jan 7, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Um, is there supposed to be a point to this? There is a place on the border where Mexico has a road and some buildings on the edge of the border and the U.S. doesn’t? Is that it? I don’t get it.
jeff // Jan 7, 2008 at 8:48 pm
I think you are one degree north of the location, here’s what I got:
32˚ 32′18.93N
117˚ 04′17.69W
Close anyway.
The US side had been used as a training area during WW2 and a bombing practice area after that, so it’s really not that shocking.

How is it hard to believe this? Mexico is filled with allot of people, allot who want to come here. America is filled with allot of people who don’t want to go to Mexico, so why would it surprise you that the more densely populated one is the Mexican one?
You're all dumb // Jan 7, 2008 at 9:02 pm
The United States is HUGE.

You're all dumb // Jan 7, 2008 at 9:10 pm
@Paul Kennedy: ” The US side of the border reminds of what the East German side of the Berlin Wall looked like.”
What the fuck? The East Germans were kept _in_. The US is much richer. Mexico is far more corrupt and socialist.
How backwards can you get?

So, america should pay some respect to those, the immigrants, who built their country.

mexicans are not the problem… it’s 3rd world poor people that are the problem… they drain resources taxpayers pay for… they commit crimes (because they are poor)… drive without insurance… some do not want to learn english, therefore requiring many government jobs to hire bilingual speakers… and they do take jobs because corporations prefer to exploit people for less pay under the table than pay fair wages… it just happens mexicans live next door, if north korea was next door we would have north koreans.
tikiloungelizard // Jan 7, 2008 at 11:29 pm
I live near there also. As the border fence slopes toward the ocean, there’s a small park, and the fence posts thin out into the ocean. Little kids and sometimes adults will walk between the posts and cross into the U.S. while they’re playing in the water, but there’s always a border patrol truck up on the bluff just above the fence to make sure no one gets too far. It’s actually a very pretty spot, and people can ride horses along the oceanfront on the U.S. side where there is no development, as it is both a protected river outlet as well as a border buffer zone.
Scott // Jan 7, 2008 at 11:32 pm
I’ve actually been to this site, on both sides. The only reason for the open space is to allow border patrol to easily identify people illegally crossing. The highway on the right leads down the pacific coast to Rosarito.

also, the fence is not nearly as high as it should be to keep those fuckers out!!! The only reason they go back to mexico is to get more drugs or deliver money to their meth gangs so they can bring it back to the US.

David… Ask yourselves this: Who is the fence for?
Paul Kennedy is an idiot // Jan 8, 2008 at 5:36 am
Congratulations Paul. You are the dumbest moron on the planet. The East Germans had towers manned with people who had orders to shoot to kill any of it’s citizens that dared try to leave their country. They had to get through the minefields first, the guard dogs and barbed wire. The East German border shared with West Germany even had mines on the actual fence if you made it that far. You show me one spot on our border where that exists to keep our people in. Idiot!
Sveerhoff // Jan 8, 2008 at 5:45 am

Take this amazing TED talk as a starter, I assure you it will shatter your preconceived ideas regarding the third world:

Perhaps “the problem” is not 3rd world poor people, but policies and government entanglements that ensure there are 3rd world poor people. You can always look at things from a wider perspective (including that one); don’t be afraid to.
The idea that one person is entitled to a standard of living and another is not, based only on whether they were born in this country or they were born in that country is a sad one.

Peace.

I love how people blame the consequences of their own bad choices on anything but themselves. Who in their right mind would work somewhere for twenty years without a wage increase?
America needs a low wage population - why should we subjugate our own citizens? Having a low wage job is not a privilige - its a survival reaction.
Whatever // Jan 8, 2008 at 3:11 pm

Mexico actually looks better to me . Looks a lot less polluted and noisy. Well, I’m sure the pollution and noise travels across, but still.

well, i must say I’m really impressed.

Of course what he did not mention, the Democrats have a good portion of their voters on that Mexican side, long live Mexmerica.

wow, it’s funny how all the people here need to call and belittle everyone else to “prove their point”. It’s pointless really.

Guillermo // Jan 13, 2008 at 5:18 pm
This photo is real. I used to live in the yellow apartment complex in the background. Every day I would walk along this highway to my job as a Mexican border patrol.
James Klich // Jan 13, 2008 at 9:49 pm
I think the border needs to be closed off. In a perfect world I would say keep it open. I want the Mexican people to have a good life. If we keep the border open Mexico will never fix its internal problems. By closing the border Mexico would be forced into dealing with its issues. In the long run this would make Mexico a better country. When Mexico fixes many of its problems the border could be opened up. Then there would be no reason for people to come to the United States. Not closing the border will hurt the U.S. in the long run. This open border could also be used to move a nuclear bomb into the U.S. by terrorists.
rachel // Jan 15, 2008 at 6:48 am
i dont think that we need a wall to close off the border, but i do think that we need a tighter system witch allows the immigrants so become legal and not have to hide

Pat // Jan 24, 2008 at 3:29 pm

“well i think that we should really get rid of this border thing because it’s just stupid”
If you did this, you’d need to abolish state-funded healthcare, education etc. Otherwise these systems would collapse anyway, in line with the median income of the USA.
Better to retain the border and just earn yourself virtue points by dissing it.
jfakjsjkfs // May 5, 2008 at 10:22 am
you don’t get it do you? this is fine. they can come here if they want, JUST DO IT LEGALLY! they need to learn the language and be able to speak it. such as for a job, school, and hospitals and for the police. they can speak whatever they want at home, just be able to speak english. on a different note i think that the mexicans are the only problem, any other immigrant needs to speak english or america will fall.we will just be a country with no culture or a set language. we need to be careful in order to stay american.
