    We’re these in B/W? I would’ve assumed color.

    FIRST!

  • Alanr // Jan 15, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Wow talk about propaganda material! They would NEVER get away with propaganda nowadays though. We’re too smart for that.

  • Anonymous // Jan 15, 2008 at 3:05 pm

    what about from other countries?

  • Steve Shepard // Jan 15, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Great collection! (wishing for color). My father ‘hit’ Normandy on June 7 and was captured during the Battle of the Bulge earning 2 purple hearts and a garbled brain. War IS hell. They should have a poster for that as well. Thanks for remembering!

  • Mike Crandall // Jan 15, 2008 at 3:23 pm

I remember all those posters from WW II. It is sad that the youth of today cannot contemplate the horrors of war abroad. My Son (a volunteer enlistee post-September 11) U.S. Marine in Iraq said it best, “America is not at war. America is at The Mall. The Marines are at war.” His unit e-mails me and says the Liberal whiners back home make it harder on them. More Marines killed because the folks at The Mall don’t vocal their support for the troops. It encourages the Iranian armed insurgency. They love it that America is divided. Those posters above helped remind people what this country stands for.

  • author // Jan 15, 2008 at 3:23 pm

why does it say color poster and they are all BW?

  • Michael // Jan 15, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Well war doesn’t do much good - but at least it does manage to engender some great art. These posters, in the ‘noir’ style, are fantastic.

I’ve finally found a collection of these pictures. Thank you.

If you monkeys can’t figure out the difference between the Osama hunt, Iraq, and WWII you are fuckin retards

  • nate sf/ca // Jan 15, 2008 at 5:04 pm

Scary? Not exactly. Entirely different context between World War II and the present day, in all regards.

  • Steve // Jan 15, 2008 at 6:41 pm

    @ Mike Crandall

Sir, your son and the rest of the marines exactly like him are dying because they invaded a foreign country. That has nothing to do with the folks at home not vocaling their support for the troops. It has a LOT to do with a common conservative American tendency to believe that the United States is always doing what is best for everyone when they commit to military aggression.

Liberal whiners believe that everyone should be spoken for and allowed to live their lives freely. This true form of freedom even permits people living in iraq to defend their nation and their liberties from oppression by American troops. It is a tragedy that your son must be the target of these attacks, but his inability to resist the propaganda and indoctrination of the US government and the mass media were what drove him to volunteer for the army. No ‘terrorists’ would be shooting at him if he’d decided to become a school teacher.

We must seek responsibility for our own actions, sir.

  • Steve // Jan 15, 2008 at 6:46 pm

… also, the only Iranian insurgency happening at this moment is the type of legend and myth. Perhaps there are some Iranians in Iraq at this time fighting for Arab rights, but there are many other Arabian countries as well.

I cannot begin to describe how beautifully you’ve exemplified the war hungry drone, Mr. Crandall. Thank you for taking time to show us exactly how a mindless slave should behave.

Tell your son to think for himself.

  • Nathan // Jan 15, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Ok my name and website were yebot.com for some reason, hope it’s a default thing, anyways…

Those posters are wonderful. Rosie the Riveter is the original icon for strong women. Our grandmothers looked up to her, and our daughters look up to Britney and Paris…

We’re so screwed, in the unfun way.

it’s like stalin’s forced collectivization of agriculture and his five year plans following that. there was a huge propaganda machine orientated on gaining public support for those policies - this i find is relatively similar in that last sense. arguably though this isn’t all “propaganda” - many of these messages were based on wartime realities. unlike the later “card carrying” communist scare tactics used after the end of the war in the united states.

Here’s a good source for color versions, we deal with these posters fairly often. I probably have 40 different WWII posters in my shop at the moment. The Flagg Uncle Sam poster is originally from WWI.

    @ Steve

I am insulted that you would talk to someone with such a condescending tone about his son fighting for other’s freedom. If we don’t stand up for up for ourselves and show the world we’re not gonna take a hit and run away, terrorists will be shooting at school teachers. If we followed your advice, people in Iraq would certainly be living a free life being dipped in vats of acid by Hussein.
Thank you for your idiotic comments, thankfully protected by the 1st amendment which you’ve never fought for. So show some respect for those who do.

  • Anonymous // Jan 15, 2008 at 9:37 pm

in response to Alanr…there has been a ton of propaganda in the modern day. prime example is “operation iraqi freedom”

  • Craig // Jan 15, 2008 at 9:38 pm

    Steve,

You follow the rising trends of society and you believe that you are somehow a nonconformist and a defender of the rights of liberals everywhere. Yet you claim Mr. Crandall’s son to be the drone? There are people better than you and I Steve. These people serve their country and believe in the leaders. They believe in something more than you will ever know. I can envision your response of how I am a brainwashed conservative or whatever it may be, but I truly do feel bad for you.

    Mr. Crandall,
Let your son know that we are not all at the mall forgetting what he and his brothers do. Tell them there are still those that understand what it means to be a patriot.

  • Kim // Jan 15, 2008 at 10:03 pm

    Steve… I concur.

Mr. Crandall… You’re son is fighting the wrong man. The true enemy is not hiding, you and your son most likely voted for him. No one is attacking our country or citizens they are attacking right-wing christians and their wallets.

  • Teage // Jan 16, 2008 at 5:03 am

    Zach,
As a veteran, I find your comment despicable. The fact of the matter is that we have been drawn into a war that many in our country do not believe in. That they voice their opinion is right and just. I have heard no comment of wishing that any service member be injured or killed in the line of duty.
Horrible tragedies occur during wartime, many of these to young people who truly had no idea what they were getting into. The fact that some here believe that this could have been avoided and was unecessary is, in your opinion, grounds for them to face one of the most tragic experiences shows more about your character then I would ever care to see. My personal feelings of the war aside, I hope that all of my brothers (sisters) in arms return safely home where they belong. Mike, I wish your son well. No matter how I feel about the war, our President, or my views on the future of this country.

  • Kevin // Jan 16, 2008 at 6:52 am

As an educator, independent and libertarian I see both sides quite clearly. WWII was certainly a different time, not only that, it required total commitment from our fellow citizens. Our leaders in the 1940’s did not lead us into a war or attack another country based on lies or mislead us by twisting facts and creating untruths as they have in Iraq. We were not attacked by a country (Iraq) as we were in WWII. Terrorists angry at us for our middle-east policies did that quite well. They won’t have a leg to stand on or a firm position should we succeed in a solid peace plan for Israel and Palestine. That is the bone of contention that has spun off all of these terrorist groups. Our current administration got us in this trumped up war.

Our soldiers are to be admired for their sacrifice even though they aren’t defending our shores directly. They signed up, they were called up, and they go, whether or not they believe in what our leaders are prescribing. It’s the American public that can put pressure on the leaders to bring our troops home to where they belong. I salute those who went, though they shouldn’t be there in the first place.

We can’t be the world’s policeman. If we continue to try to do so, we won’t have any left to protect our own here at home.

    Kevin,

Uh, Germany never attacked us. That was Japan. Hitler declared war on us, but that doesn’t obligate us to invade their country at the cost of tens of thousands American dead and millions of German dead. Hitler didn’t have any WMDs. What, were we afraid that Hitler was going to invade the USA? We could have simply focused on our shore defenses. After all, we can’t be the world’s policemen. The same goes for Japan. The Japanese had no plans to invade the USA mainland nor did they have any WMDs. Surrendering Hawaii would have saved millions of lives and would have been a small price to pay. We stole it anyway. Then of course there are those who claim Roosevelt lied and knew about Pearl Harbor all along.

Until you can figure out what is wrong with the above statements, you will never have a clue about Iraq and the War on Terror.

  • Anon // Jan 16, 2008 at 4:57 pm

If we didn’t attack Iraq, your son wouldn’t be in danger. Attacking Iraq has done nothing to stop terrorists in this country. The Patriot act and spying on Americans hasn’t done anything — if it had, don’t you think we would’ve heard about it?

    Great posters, though, thanks.

  • Anon // Jan 16, 2008 at 6:55 pm

    @ Kevin
“We can’t be the world’s policeman. If we continue to try to do so, we won’t have any left to protect our own here at home.”
You just summed up the whole thing, we can not be the policeman for the world and we should not be dictating our believes on those people. Please someone realize that it is their (Iraq/Afghanistan) war and not ours. Let them deal with it. Unfortunately, it is also our war as some companies and some people are making a fortune here and our boys and girls are paying for it with their lives - Our War: Stop this madness.

  • Pbf444 // Jan 17, 2008 at 9:53 pm

The strong must stand up for the weak. If we hide at home that is where we will have to fight our battles. It does not matter what we do, if we do nothing we will be hated for allowing evil to run wild, if we fight evil we will be hated for butting in. Either way, in the end we will have to defend our selfs and I say it should be sooner than later and preferably not in my own back yard.

It’s all happened before - first the brown shirts, then the SS, then their ‘programs to protect the security of the fatherland’ - same stuff, different day. A little bit of liberty at a time, in the name of security. We’ve even got a decent shot of having a wall built along our border a la Berlin “to protect us” though, it may just end up keeping us in rather than them out. What do we do about our soldiers over there - we respect them now and honor them when they get home. No one giving so much deserves any less. And, get their butts out of there as quickly as we can. God knows they are doing their best and we’ve heard the phrase “just following orders” many times before - the real criminals are very easy to identify - they are the ones profiting from this madness. The sad truth for America “Corporate” Government makes war into business and our soldiers are the unfortunate pawns. Keep a careful eye on the ball dubbaya- or the players will find another game. If we were a country of true patriots, there would be tea being dumped in the Potomac within sight of Pennsylvania Ave. right this minute. In a just world, a tribunal in the Hague will initiate the process and begin the war crimes trials and there won’t be any asylum for Georgie in Costa Rico. Read your history Georgie, the pot does eventually come to a boil.

  • Gordon // Jan 23, 2008 at 1:26 pm

Nazi germany did not attack america either.. It was japan so the logic that applies to iraq did nothing applies to nazi germany what part of America did they attack pre entering the war? Osama declared war on US 2 times when clinton was president what did he do about it. Last time I checked 911 was WORSE than pearl harbor some people here cant grasp that fact at least the JAPANESE attacked military targets these clowns targeted civilians

  • Viddy // Jan 27, 2008 at 2:57 pm

This isn’t even a drop in the propaganda bucket; where are the posters depicting a brutally-featured German, inscribed with “Halt the HUN!”?

  • Crazy Ivan // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:26 pm

“The strong must stand up for the weak”
If the weak calls for you, then by all means. The problem is, noone called for America’s help, nonetheless the troops are there. I call that invasion. Defence is made on your own soil, not in my back yard. You ar enot defending anything, that oil there in middle east isn’t American, it belongs to the country it is in.

  • Cyt // Jan 27, 2008 at 11:52 pm

    @ Gordon
“…at least the JAPANESE attacked military targets these clowns targeted civilians”

Even though i do not approve of terrorism, let us not forget the other ‘clowns’ and their means of ending the WW2 on the pacific front. Targeting civilians is what we, today, call terrorism, but it has always been the tactics of the desperate.
Maybe we should think before we start throwing accusations.

  • Cyt // Jan 28, 2008 at 12:08 am

    More on the subject…
The US isn’t disliked worldwide because of the need to ‘help the weaker’, but rather for the fact that ‘the weaker’ always seems to be where the oil is.
There are numerous ways of helping the needy in the world which do not include military involvement and would even prove to be cheaper for the benevolent US.
I do not blame the young soldiers who are fighting for the interests of greedy politicians and think they are changing the world and doing the right thing… I wish them well. I do blame, however, the US leadership.

I do like the posters. They best show the problems and fears of the (WW2) period.

  • Marine // Jan 28, 2008 at 1:07 am

WWII was the last honourable war that US fought, it was fought for freedom pure!
All subsequent wars were fought for materialistic prizes.

  • T // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:18 am

US invading Iraq due to 911 is equivalent to Spain invading Kuwait due to Madrid bombings. Oil has nothing to do with it.

  • Cyt // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:49 am

Oil has everything to do with it. Are you claiming that WMDs were also a legitimate reason for the US involvement?

Many people seem to have many views as to what the war in Iraq is all about. I am a believer in the war not for the good of my country but for the the basic principle that many people there needed help from an opressive regime. Further more, for the general safety of the greater world in general. I work as a doorman for a second job, I appreciate the value of a pre-emptive strike. If you wait in a certain situation too long without action, you make yourself more vulnerable by the second.

The only people who seem to me to claim the war is wrong is the very people who have no sense of moral obligation to the greater good of humanity. Would you walk by an old lady getting a kicking in the street by a few youths if you thought you could do something to help. The world is a smaller place nowadays. Countries have become less of enemies and more siblings to each other. It’s our duty to help those that can’t help themselves.

The world is at unrest at present and it will only get worse unless we as individuals find our backbone and stand up for what we believe in.

    On a lighter note:
My day job is a graphic designer and these posters are brilliant forms of communicative art. Simple and to the point. Powerful, provocative, also slightly intimidating. Perfect for their cause…true graphic communication!
